You will agree with me when I say that Bollywood still has some actors & directors who over the period of time have developed this ability to attract a specific set of audience to watch their movies and Anurag Kashyap is one of them for me. After the entire courtroom drama his movie, Ugly, has finally released.
Before you start reading this post, I want you to watch this trailer and mentally prepare yourself for the movie.
Movie starts with Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) trying to kill herself but withdraws her thoughts when Kali, her 10 year old daughter appears. Same day she allows Kali to go for a cartoon movie with her ex-husband Rahul (Rahul Bhat) and from then Kali goes missing. Rahul still loves Kali a lot and couldn't digest the fact that she has gone missing, so he starts the search for Kali. Slowly, new characters are introduced in the movie who somehow are related to Kali and story starts taking different twists and turns. Shoumik Bose played by Ronit Roy is a lead cop in the detention unit and happens to be Shalini's husband. In the first 10 minutes of the movie it is evident that Kali is missing, so what's the suspense? The suspense is, who has kidnapped Kali and why?
The best part about the movie is, you cannot predict what will happen next. It is suspense & thriller at it's best. Every single scene in the movie makes you think about Kali and the direction doesn't deviate to any other topic. You will feel the presence of Kali in every scene even when you know that she is missing. Girish Kulkarni, a renowned actor from the Marathi film industry, plays an important character in the movie and plays it so convincingly that you think you have met him somewhere sometime in your life. Every single actor in the movie justifies their character.
The movie is all about that side of humans which they hide even from themselves, it talks about the importance of belonging to someone wholeheartedly and yet being ignored. I wonder how Anurag Kashyap always manages to discover this dark side of humans himself first and then convey the same to us. Greed & loneliness are two of the important emotions demonstrated in the movie.
Ugly may not be for the masses but the niche audience will love it. Ugly is B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L! I would rate it 4.5/5 stars!
